Ever wondered what to do in San Sebastián beyond the Old Town? I recently spent a few days exploring the New Town, and it was an experience full of unexpected delights. Picture this: the salty sea breeze from La Concha Bay, the hum of friendly chatter in Alderdi Eder Park, and the sight of Eduardo Chillida's sculptures against the crashing waves. If you're looking for things to do in San Sebastián that go beyond the usual tourist spots, you've come to the right place.

San Sebastian New Town
San Sebastian New Town

San Sebastián, or Donostia as it's known in Basque, has a rich history dating back to 1180 when it was founded by King Sancho the Wise of Navarre. While the Old Town, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, draws many visitors, the New Town offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's evolution. After a devastating fire in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars, the city was rebuilt and expanded. The New Town, developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcases elegant Belle Époque architecture and wide, tree-lined boulevards.

The New Town is divided into several distinct areas, each with its unique character. The Centre is the commercial and administrative heart, bustling with shops, cafes, and landmarks. Gros is a lively district known for its surfing scene and vibrant nightlife. Egia is a cultural hub with parks and art centres, while Igeldo offers stunning views and a charming vintage amusement park. Exploring these diverse neighbourhoods gives you a deeper understanding of San Sebastián beyond its famous Old Town.

Funicular Monte Igueldo

Take the Funicular Monte Igueldo up to the hilltop amusement park. This charming, old-fashioned ride offers spectacular views of the city and the bay. The funicular, in operation since 1912, provides a nostalgic experience as it ascends the scenic hillside, giving you a unique perspective of San Sebastián. The wooden carriages and gentle climb add to the charm of this historic attraction, making it a memorable part of your visit. The ride itself is an attraction, offering panoramic views of the city as it climbs the steep hill. At the top, you’re greeted with even more breathtaking views that are perfect for photos.

Funicular Monte Igueldo

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

The funicular runs every 15-minutes, but note that it does not operate on Wednesdays and operating times vary depending on the day and season.

Parque de Atracciones Monte Igueldo

The funicular will take you to the summit of Monte Igueldo where you’ll find the Parque de Atracciones Monte Igueldo, a vintage amusement park with attractions that harken back to the early 20th century. Enjoy a ride on the wooden rollercoaster, try your luck at the fairground games, or simply take in the breathtaking views from the park's vantage points. It's a delightful spot for families and those seeking a touch of old-world charm. The park's retro ambiance and unique rides make it a fun and nostalgic experience. One of the highlights is the Swiss Mountain ride, which offers incredible views of the bay as you twist and turn through the open-air track. The park also has a charming carousel and classic bumper cars that add to its nostalgic appeal.

Parque de Attracciones Monte Igueldo

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

Check the opening times for the amusement park. It is open every Saturday and Sunday, most Fridays, but only throughout the week during the warmer months. If it is closed, a trip to Mount Igueldo is still well worth it, just for the views.

Comb of the Wind (Eduardo Chillida, 1976)

One of my favourite San Sebastián attractions is the Comb of the Wind by Eduardo Chillida. These massive steel sculptures are embedded in the rocks at the western end of Ondarreta Beach. They interact with the wind and waves, creating a dynamic and mesmerizing scene. It's a great spot to sit and reflect while watching the natural elements at play. The sculptures are a testament to Chillida's genius and the harmony between art and nature. The surrounding area is designed with blowholes in the ground that create a powerful visual and auditory experience as the waves crash and the wind blows through. It's a place where you can feel the raw power of nature and the brilliance of human creativity combined.

There is another, less famous, Eduardo Chillida sculpture on the edge of La Concha Bay that is often overlooked. It is dedicated to Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered the benefits of penicillin and can be found at the foot of the Miramar Jauregia palace.

Miramar Jauregia

Miramar Jauregia is a 19th-century palace offering breathtaking views of La Concha Bay. The gardens are perfect for a peaceful stroll, and the panoramic views are simply stunning. The palace, once a summer residence for the Spanish royal family, now hosts cultural events and offers insight into the region's aristocratic past. It's a wonderful spot to relax and take in the views of the bay, with its well-manicured gardens providing a serene backdrop. The architecture of the palace itself is a beautiful example of English Queen Anne style, with its red brick and white stone trimmings giving it a regal appearance.

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

Between the palace and the beach, there is a tunnel for pedestrians. Check out the interesting mural on the ceiling of the tunnel!

Bay of La Concha

From Miramar Jauregia, you can walk along the Bay of La Concha, one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. The beach is ideal for a relaxing afternoon, whether you're sunbathing, swimming, or just people-watching. The promenade is lined with elegant railings and picturesque views, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. La Concha is known for its calm waters and family-friendly atmosphere, making it a favourite among both locals and tourists. The area is also dotted with cafes and benches where you can sit and enjoy the coastal views. At night, the bay is beautifully lit, providing a romantic setting for evening walks.

Artzain Onaren Katedrala

In the heart of the New Town, you’ll find the Artzain Onaren Katedrala (Good Shepherd Cathedral). This Neo-Gothic cathedral is San Sebastián’s largest religious building and features stunning stained glass windows and intricate architecture. Its towering spire and serene interior make it a peaceful retreat in the bustling city. The cathedral's grand design and tranquil atmosphere provide a perfect escape from the urban hustle. Inside, you can admire the detailed woodwork and impressive altar, which make it not only a place of worship but also a work of art. The cathedral often hosts concerts, taking advantage of its excellent acoustics to provide a unique cultural experience.

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

While visiting the cathedral, make the short walk to the Puente de Maria Cristina. This splendid bridge is well worth a look at.

De Okendo Plaza

De Okendo Plaza  is another charming square, offering a tranquil space with beautiful sculptures and well-kept gardens. It's a quiet spot perfect for a short rest during your city explorations. The square is a favourite among locals for its peaceful ambiance and greenery. The inviting benches and scenic views make it a perfect rest stop. It’s an ideal place to take a break and enjoy the tranquil environment amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.

De Okendo Plaza

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

See if can spot the bullet holes in the buildings that surround this serene park. During the Spanish Civil War, this was the scene of brief, but intense fighting.

De Okendo Plaza

Gipuzkoa Plaza

Gipuzkoa Plaza is a beautiful square surrounded by landscaped gardens and a peaceful pond. It's a great place to relax and take in the surroundings, with plenty of benches and shaded spots. The plaza often hosts events and markets, adding to its lively atmosphere. The meticulously maintained gardens and charming pond create a serene oasis in the city's center. The square is also home to a meteorological monument and a large flower clock, which are interesting features to check out. It’s a wonderful place to sit and people-watch, enjoying the daily life of San Sebastián.

Gipuzkoa Plaza

Alderdi Eder Parkea

Don't miss Alderdi Eder Parkea, located near the beach and in front of the San Sebastián City Hall. The park is a popular spot with locals, featuring colourful flowerbeds, towering palm trees, and a delightful carousel. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the coastal scenery. The park's vibrant flowers and historic carousel add a touch of whimsy and beauty to your visit. The adjacent gardens and pathways are perfect for a leisurely walk, and the park often hosts public events and performances, adding to its lively charm. It's a lovely spot to relax, read a book, or enjoy a picnic.

San Sebastián City Hall

The San Sebastián City Hall, housed in the former casino building, is an architectural gem worth a quick visit. Its stunning facade and central location make it a key landmark in the city. You can admire the building from outside or take a brief tour to learn about its history and significance. The building's historical significance and elegant design make it a must-see. Inside, you’ll find impressive rooms and ornate decorations that reflect its past as a grand casino. The city hall often hosts exhibitions and cultural events, providing a glimpse into the local arts and governance.

Kursaal

Walk across the Kursaal Zubia (Kursaal Bridge) towards the Kursaal, a modern architectural complex housing a concert hall and conference centre. The area around Kursaal is lively and vibrant, with plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat. The building itself is a striking piece of contemporary architecture, hosting various cultural events and performances. The dynamic design and bustling surroundings make it a cultural hotspot. The Kursaal complex, designed by Rafael Moneo, is composed of two large cubic structures that illuminate beautifully at night, creating a striking visual effect. It’s a key venue for the city’s cultural scene, hosting events like the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Kursaal

Zurriola Beach

Zurriola Beach is known for its surfing scene and vibrant atmosphere. Unlike the calm waters of La Concha, Zurriola is a hotspot for surfers and a great place to watch the sunset. The beach's lively vibe and scenic views make it a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the local culture.

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

The energetic surf scene and picturesque setting make it a favourite among experienced surfers or enthusiastic beginners.

Tabakalera

Tabakalera, a former tobacco factory turned cultural centre, is a must-visit. It hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events, offering a glimpse into the local contemporary art scene. The building’s industrial architecture blends seamlessly with modern design, making it a hub for creative minds and cultural activities. The diverse programming and innovative space attract artists and visitors alike. Inside, you’ll find a cinema, library, and various spaces for artists to work and collaborate. The rooftop terrace offers fantastic views of the city, making it a great spot to visit both for the art and the scenery.

Tabakalera

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

There are a couple of cafes on the ground floor of the building and offer a chance to sit down and contemplate the exhibitions with a coffee.

Also on the ground floor is a large, covered courtyard with an impressive contemporary chandelier. Make sure to look up when you are entering the exhibit space.

Tabakalera

Cristina Enea Parkea

Nearby is Cristina Enea Parkea, a vast park perfect for a leisurely walk. The park’s lush greenery and serene atmosphere make it a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. It’s a great spot for a picnic, a jog, or simply enjoying nature in the heart of San Sebastián. The park's expansive trails and tranquil setting offer a refreshing escape.

Cristina Enea Parkea

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

The most popular part of the park is on the lower level on the western side, however, if you are looking for a bit more peace and quiet, I found that the large circular area on the elevated eastern side was the perfect place. Plus there were some interesting sculptures dotted around here.

Eureka! Zientzia Museoa

For a dose of science and fun, head to the Eureka! Zientzia Museoa, an interactive science museum great for all ages. The museum features hands-on exhibits and educational displays that make learning about science and technology engaging and enjoyable for visitors. The interactive exhibits and engaging activities make it a hit with both kids and adults.

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

The museum is in the southern suburbs. If you don't have access to a car, you can reach the museum by using the number 28 bus (which you can get from the Boulevard Zumardia just outside the Old Town) or a number 17 bus (which connects to Gros).

Take a selfie with Einstein!

Eureka! Zientzia Museoa

Chillida-Leku Museum

The Chillida-Leku Museum is dedicated to the works of Eduardo Chillida. The outdoor sculpture park and indoor exhibitions provide an immersive experience of Chillida's art. The museum is set on a wonderful rolling hillside, lined with mature beech, oak and magnolia trees, and is centred around the Zabalaga farmhouse, which dates back to the 16th century and was Chillida’s home for many years. The museum spans 12 hectares and features 40 large-scale sculptures outdoors and around multitude of smaller works exhibited within the farmhouse.

Chillida-Leku Museum

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

The museum is approximately 10 km from the centre of San Sebastian, in the satellite town of Hernani. If you don’t have access to a car, there are bus stops on either side of the road beside the museum entrance. The BU05 bus takes just over half an hour to connect with the centre of San Sebastian, with the termination bus stop being on Okendo Kalea, just behind the theatre.

Conclusion

Exploring the New Town of San Sebastián offers a fresh perspective on this beautiful city. From historic sites and art installations to serene parks and lively beaches, there's no shortage of things to see in San Sebastián. So next time you're planning a trip to Donostia San Sebastián, venture beyond the Old Town and discover the many attractions in San Sebastián's New Town.

Where to stay in San Sebastian

San Sebastian is a very popular, if not a somewhat pricey resort. If you wish to experience the life of one of the Hollywood stars that descend on the San Sebastian International Film Festival, book your room at the Hotel Maria Cristina. Alternatively, the Nobu Hotel San Sebastián and the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra will also keep you in the lap of luxury and are some of the very best San Sebastian hotels.

Hotel Maria Cristina, San Sebastian

Small pensions and apartments can be found throughout San Sebastian, especially in the Old Town. I chose a budget option for my stay, having a very comfortable time at the Pension Aussie Guesthouse and found it perfectly located, right in the very heart of the Old Town.

There are several mid-priced options in the Centro district. As the name suggests, a stay in this area puts you with an easy walking distance of most of the city’s attractions. Consider staying at the likes of the Loaldia or the Hotel Arrizul Catedral. As for budget options, there are hostels available, like The City Hostel.
